Bannerman’s Pass
An excellent beginners summit hike, this two night journey is based in the beautiful Giant’s Castle area, and both nights are spent at Bannerman’s Hut at the base of the pass.
On day one we hike the 11kms up the ridge and northwards along the contour path to the base of Bannerman’s Hut. Positioned next to the river and just below the escarpment, it’s about the most comfy and scenic accomodation in the berg wilderness.
The second day sees us ascending the pass without having to carry all of our gear (assistant stays behind) and it’s a relatively straightforward pass in Drakensberg terms. In summer months, waterfalls are seen in every direction, and we follow a river path up the pass. On the summit we move a little south and take up a good viewpoint for lunch before descending back down to the hut.
Depending on how the group feels we can take the same route back on day three, or the slightly longer loop via the historic Langalibalele ridge and back to the hikers parking.
