Special night with just the right amount of white Special night with just the right amount of white noiseDisclaimer: never camp near a Drakensberg river between October and April, or if rain is forecast, or snow melt is possible. Quite often see Rock Kestrels and Lanner Falcons o Quite often see Rock Kestrels and Lanner Falcons on this ridge near the Rockeries and finally had a camera on hand (borrowed from a client) to get a semi decent shot. Mnweni Pins in the background. Birds always seem way cooler when they’re above 3000m 😁 #birds #drakensberg
I’m not into clickbait or comment seeking but genu I’m not into clickbait or comment seeking but genuinely feeling like this is a conversation worth having. The previous time I posted a clip of a campsite near a river, a lot of strong comments were made about safety and the ‘Ships Prow’ tragedy. As a guide I tell my guests that safety is my first priority and then enjoyment. But that being said, if you’re going to enjoy the outdoors I prefer using stats over fear. Isolated incidents should not necessarily set a precedent because in that case we would never leave our homes. Camping next to a river in certain dry months in the Drakensberg where; you are at the river source, there is 0% chance of precipitation forecast, and no possible snow melt, is in my opinion safer than camping under a tree or near a steep bank. Of course there are seasons and conditions where I would never camp near a river (regardless of the forecast) but life is about choices and weighing up the risks. Planes crashing hasn’t stopped us flying, the titanic sinking didn’t end the day of the ship. In fact stats show clearly that the highest risk in most adventures is the drive to get there. So enjoying a spot like this when the risk is negligible is part of the joy of hiking in Winter. Does it set a bad example for people who don’t know how to weigh up the risks? Perhaps, but in my experience uninformed hikers see a flat sandy spot by a river and don’t think twice about camping there anyway. Maybe it’s better to talk about how to make good choices rather than blanket banning ideas. Anyway those are my thoughts… happy to hear yours and to be convinced otherwise. 🙏🏻
