Southern Traverse
Not your standard tourist route, this hike follows a good portion of the second half of the Drakensberg Grand Traverse, and is best suited to experienced multi day hikers. Starting at Giants Castle and finishing at the base of Sani Pass we ascend the famous Giants Castle pass and spend the first night on the summit.
Days 2 and 3 traverse the escarpment bordering SA and Lesotho, passed the prominent Tent, Hawk, and Redi peaks, before summiting the highest point in Southern Africa; Thabana Ntlenyane.
Night 3 is a comfy cultural experience spent at my good friend Pastor Thato’s spot near the top of Sani Pass, where he gives us an insight into the life of the Lesotho shepherd, as well as spoiling us with rondavel accommodation, a hot shower, and great food!
On Day 4 we descend Masubasuba pass and spend our final night in the fantastic Gxalingenwa cave, before a short final day down the valley, passing Ngenwa falls, to the Sani road pick up point. A shuttle will then transport us back around to Giants Castle, with a couple mandatory stops for lunch and coffees!
